Grok releases the first seven minutes of its AI-generated “Odyssey”

xAI’s Grok released the first seven minutes of an AI-generated adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey, calling it “Episode 1 of our Odyssey series”. It was made with Grok Imagine, xAI’s video generation tool, together with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker. Elon Musk had announced in July that Grok would make a full-length film. TechCrunch’s reviewer found some shots could pass for real footage, but said the dialogue is stilted and the storytelling lacks momentum.

Block’s voice model Dessa laughs, pauses and sounds eerily human

Block, the company led by Jack Dorsey, unveiled Dessa, a full-duplex speech-to-speech model that can listen and talk at the same time. It generates speech with expressions such as laughs, pauses and cries, and holds conversations without a separate large language model. Block says Dessa can run locally on a MacBook M4 Max or better. It is not publicly available yet; Block has asked safety researchers to test it, especially for cases where a voice agent could deceive people.

Canva opens Craft, its first in-house AI image model, to all users

Canva unveiled Canva Craft, the first AI image generation model built by its own research team. The model first reads the prompt and plans the layout, element scale and text, then generates the image at up to 2K resolution in up to 30 aspect ratios. It was trained on Canva’s human-designed templates such as posters, presentations and menus rather than photographs, and promises legible text and precise edits that leave the rest of the image untouched. Craft is available to all Canva users through the Dream Lab tab and via the Canva API, with two cheaper, faster variants on the way.
